Lyrics
Programme Notes
Parry's most famous work,
Jerusalem, was written in 1916 as a setting for unison
chorus and orchestra of William Blake's poem. Elgar made
an orchestral arrangement in 1922 for the Leeds festival
and both versions are regularly played. Jerusalem normally
forms the climax at the last night of the Proms season in
London; its soaring grandeur has long been associated with
everything that was English in the early twentieth
century.
